Amberd Fortress

Amberd stands on a triangular spur of Mount Aragats where two river gorges meet, which made it defensible on two sides and gave it a position with enormous views over the Ararat plain. The fortress was built and extended between the seventh and thirteenth centuries by the Kamsarakan and then Pahlavuni families, and what survives is a substantial ruin of basalt walls, towers and a bathhouse with a hypocaust system, along with a small church of 1026 standing almost intact beside it, its cone-roofed drum a classic Armenian silhouette. The name means fortress in the clouds, and it earns it: at two thousand three hundred metres the site is often in mist that comes and goes, revealing and hiding the plain and, on clear days, Ararat itself across the valley.

What you actually see

• The fortress walls - basalt ramparts and towers on the gorge spur.
• The 1026 church - the small, nearly intact church beside the ruins.
• The bathhouse - the remains of the heated bath and its hypocaust.
• The view - over the gorges and out to the Ararat plain on a clear day.

When to go

June to October, as the access road is closed by snow for much of the year and can stay shut into late spring; even in summer the site is often wrapped in cloud. Mornings are usually clearer. It combines with the Byurakan observatory and the Aragats lake road.

Honest expectations

The road up is closed by snow for a long season and conditions change fast at this altitude, so check before driving. The site is exposed with no shelter and cloud frequently hides the views entirely. The ruins are unrestored and unsigned, so a little background helps. Footing among the walls is rough.
