Santa Rosa de Tastil

Santa Rosa de Tastil is one of the largest pre-Hispanic urban sites in Argentina, a town of stone-walled houses, streets, plazas and terraces built across a hillside above the Quebrada del Toro at around 3,200 metres. At its height, roughly between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, it may have held several thousand inhabitants, making it a substantial settlement for the region, and it was abandoned shortly before the Inca expansion reached the valley. Walking the marked path through the ruins, the layout is readable: rectangular dwellings packed close, passages between them, corrals at the edges, and burial areas beyond. A small museum in the village below holds finds from the site, and the setting, ringed by dry mountains, is memorable in itself.

When to go

April to November for dry weather and firm paths; summer storms can wash out sections of the RN51. The site is exposed with no shade, so early morning or late afternoon is far more comfortable. It combines well with the drive toward San Antonio de los Cobres.

What to expect

What survives is foundations rather than standing buildings, so the site takes imagination and rewards the museum visit first. The walk is at altitude and on uneven stone. Opening hours can be irregular, depending on whether the village guide is available.
