Grutas do Nzenzo

The Nzenzo caves are a limestone system in the forested country of Uige province in northern Angola, with chambers, formations and underground water. They are known locally and have been visited by expeditions, but they are not developed, surveyed in full or lit, and there is no visitor infrastructure of any kind. Getting in means finding guides in the nearest village and carrying your own lights, which is the situation for most caves in the country.

What you actually see

• The chambers - limestone halls and passages within the system.
• The formations - stalactites and flowstone through the accessible sections.
• The underground water - streams and pools in the lower passages.
• The forest - dense northern woodland covering the ground above.

When to go

May to September is the dry season and the practical window; passages flood in the wet months. Guides are found in the nearest villages. The rains from October to April make the tracks impassable.

Honest expectations

There is no lighting, no fixed route and no rescue if something goes wrong. Nobody should enter without a local guide, proper lights and a second party outside. The roads in Uige province are poor and the drive is long.
