Serra da Neve

Serra da Neve stands alone at 2,489 metres above the dry plains of Namibe province, an inselberg isolated from the main escarpment, and its height traps moisture that the surrounding desert never gets. The result is an island of montane vegetation with species recorded nowhere else, and biologists have described new reptiles and plants from it in recent years. The name means snow range, which it does not get; the reference is to the pale rock and cloud that caps it.

When to go

May to September is the dry season and the practical window. The wet season from November to March makes the tracks impassable. Nights on the mountain are cold in any season.

Honest expectations

There is no infrastructure at all: no road to the top, no guide service, no accommodation. Reaching it needs a properly equipped expedition with local knowledge. It is a place for researchers and serious travellers rather than a day out.
