Arenal is the most iconic volcano in Costa Rica, a majestic, near-perfectly conical peak rising above lush rainforest and a great lake near the town of La Fortuna. Long one of the world's most active volcanoes until it quietened around 2010, it remains the heart of the country's adventure playground, ringed by hiking trails over old lava flows, waterfalls, hanging bridges and, fed by its geothermal heat, a wealth of natural hot springs and thermal resorts to soak in.

What you actually see

  • The volcano - the majestic conical peak above the rainforest.
  • The hot springs - the natural thermal springs and spa resorts.
  • La Fortuna Waterfall - the beautiful jungle waterfall nearby.
  • The hanging bridges and trails - the walks over old lava and through forest.

When to go

December to April, the dry season, for the clearest views and best trails, as the summit is often wrapped in cloud; a clear morning shows the cone at its best. The rainforest is green and lush year-round, and the hot springs are a joy in any weather.

Honest expectations

The summit is very often shrouded in cloud, so a clear view of the perfect cone is not guaranteed. The volcano is no longer actively erupting with visible lava, so do not expect fireworks. La Fortuna is touristy and the hot-spring resorts range widely in price. It is, though, a superb, activity-packed base amid beautiful scenery.

Nearby

Monteverde cloud forest, the Rio Celeste and Lake Arenal are within reach.
