Modric was discovered in 1985 and deliberately never turned into a show cave: it has no paths, no steps and no electric lighting, and it is visited in small guided groups wearing helmets and headlamps, walking and scrambling on the natural floor. The point of that decision is preservation - the formations are in the condition they were found in, without the algae and dust that lighting and heavy traffic bring. There are around 800 metres of passage with chambers of stalactites, columns and flowstone. Archaeological material has been found in the entrance area. Trips run from Starigrad and must be booked; it is managed with Paklenica national park.

What you actually see

  • A cave left unlit - no paths, steps or electric lighting.
  • Helmet and headlamp visits - small guided groups only.
  • Formations in found condition - the reason for the restrictions.
  • About 800 metres of passage - chambers, columns and flowstone.

When to go

April to October, on booked trips. Three hours.

Honest expectations

This is caving, not a walk - you will be scrambling, getting muddy and using your hands. It is unsuitable for small children, poor mobility or claustrophobia. Booking ahead is required and groups are capped.

Nearby

Paklenica national park is south; the Maslenica bridge is above.
