Tulove Grede is a group of pale limestone towers on the southern end of Velebit, rising to about 1,120 metres, weathered into blocks and pinnacles above bare karst. In the 1960s the German producers of the Winnetou films, adapting Karl May's novels of the American west, used this landscape for their exteriors, and the towers appear repeatedly in the films as the Wild West; the association is strong enough in the German-speaking world that visitors still come specifically for it. The area is inside Velebit nature park, exposed and waterless, and the bura wind here is among the strongest recorded anywhere.

What you actually see

  • Pale limestone towers - weathered blocks at about 1,120 metres.
  • The Winnetou films' Wild West - shot here in the 1960s.
  • Bare karst all around - no cover, no water.
  • Some of the strongest bura recorded - the wind that scours the ridge.

When to go

May to October; the bura can make it impassable in any season. A full day.

Honest expectations

There is no water on the route and no shade at all. The bura here has overturned vehicles on the road below and can make walking impossible. Paths are rough karst that punishes ankles. Mines from the 1990s were an issue in parts of Velebit - stay on marked routes.

Nearby

Obrovac and the Zrmanja canyon are below; Starigrad Paklenica is south.
