The road from Lubango to the coast has one problem to solve - the Huila plateau ends in a wall - and Serra da Leba solves it beautifully: a 1970s engineering set piece that stacks hairpin over hairpin down a thousand-metre escarpment, the switchbacks nesting inside each other so photogenically that the pass decorates banknote-level national iconography. The clifftop viewpoint looks straight down the coils into the green lowlands, mist often pouring over the rim in slow motion, and the drive itself - truckers, mango stalls, baboons on the barriers - is Angola compressed into twenty minutes of bends.

What you actually see

  • The viewpoint - the full hairpin stack from the escarpment lip.
  • The descent drive - riding the coils down the wall.
  • The mist falls - cloud pouring off the plateau edge on humid days.
  • The Tundavala pairing - the sister escarpment gap north of Lubango.

When to go

May to September for clear dry-season visibility; early morning beats both haze and truck traffic. After rains the mist theatrics peak but the view plays hide-and-seek.

Honest expectations

It is a road and a viewpoint - a half-day outing from Lubango paired with Tundavala and the Cristo Rei, not a full destination. The highway carries serious truck traffic on real gradients; drive defensively and use the pull-offs. The viewpoint edge is casually fenced at best.
