Roc del Quer Viewpoint

Roc del Quer solves the viewpoint problem with engineering: a walkway launched twenty metres out from the mountainside above Canillo, its final stretch floored partly in glass, so the Valira valley scrolls five hundred metres below your shoes. At the tip sits The Ponder, a bronze figure seated on a girder gazing at the mountains, which has become one of the country's most photographed artworks. The panorama runs the length of the central valleys with Grandvalira's peaks behind, and the whole stop takes an easy hour with the drive.

When to go

May to October for open access roads and clear air; mornings often beat the valley haze. Winter visits depend on snow on the access road. Sunset colours the western peaks but brings the day's crowds.

Honest expectations

It is a drive-up viewpoint, popular and often busy - queues form for the tip photo in summer. Vertigo sufferers should know the glass section is genuinely airy and skippable via the solid side. Cloud can fill the valley and erase everything; check webcams before driving up specially.
