Sanctuary of Canòlich

Canòlich stands on a shelf high above Sant Julià de Lòria with a view down the valley and across to the mountains, a small sanctuary whose Romanesque image of the Virgin has been venerated for centuries, and on the last Saturday in May the parish holds a pilgrimage there that is among the older continuing traditions in the country. The building was extended in the twentieth century and the terrace outside is where the gathering happens.

When to go

The pilgrimage is on the last Saturday in May. May to October is the pleasant season generally. Winter access depends on the road.

Honest expectations

Outside the pilgrimage the sanctuary is often locked. The building was much altered in the twentieth century. The road up is narrow and winding.
