The Eckero Post and Customs House

At the old mail route's western landing, the Russian empire built its calling card: the Eckero Post and Customs House (1828), designed by Carl Ludvig Engel - architect of Helsinki's monumental centre - as a neoclassical statement deliberately outscaled for its fishing-village setting, announcing imperial presence to arrivals from Sweden across the water. The colonnaded front still commands the shore; exhibitions inside tell the mail road's story - the islanders' perilous duty rowing post across the Aland Sea - alongside galleries and the postal museum's stamps. The building's grand-façade-versus-tiny-harbour comedy remains its most photographed truth.

History

After Russia took over Finland in 1809 and made it an autonomous Grand Duchy, its new rulers wanted to show their might to the Swedes and to passing seafarers, and at Eckerö, the westernmost post house on the Finnish side of the old mail route between Stockholm and Turku, they built one deliberately far too large for a small village, to a design by Carl Ludvig Engel, finished in 1828. It is four times the size of the Grisslehamn post house on the Swedish side of the Sea of Åland, and today it holds a postal museum, an art gallery and an artist in residence programme (Wikipedia, Eckerö Mail and Customs House).
