Sälskär is a skerry north of the Åland main island carrying a lighthouse built in the 1860s, standing alone on bare rock with open water in every direction. The name means seal skerry and grey seals still haul out on the rocks around it. Seabirds nest on the skerry in numbers, which means landing is restricted during the breeding season. There is no regular service and trips are private. The lighthouse was automated decades ago and the keepers' quarters have stood empty since.
