Europa Point

Europa Point, the dramatic southern tip of Gibraltar, is one of the most evocative spots in the territory, a windswept headland marking very nearly the southernmost point of continental Europe. Here the land falls away to the meeting of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and on a clear day the mountains of Morocco rise strikingly across the narrow strait, just a few miles away. The point is crowned by the historic Trinity Lighthouse, which has guided ships since the nineteenth century, alongside a handsome mosque, a shrine and modern viewpoints. Standing here at the edge of a continent, with two seas below and Africa on the horizon, is a genuinely stirring experience.

When to go

April to October brings warm, clear weather ideal for the views across to Africa, though the point is accessible year-round; clear days, often in spring and autumn, offer the sharpest sight of the Moroccan mountains. The headland can be breezy whatever the season.

Honest expectations

Europa Point is an open, windswept headland whose appeal is its dramatic position and views rather than extensive attractions, so a visit is fairly short. As the southern tip of Europe, gazing across the strait to Africa where two seas meet, crowned by a historic lighthouse, though, Europa Point is a genuinely stirring and memorable place.
