Main Street and the Old Town

Main Street runs its kilometre between fortress gates as the territory's cultural compression chamber: red phone boxes and fish-and-chips beside Genoese shutters and Spanish balconies, Regency facades over Moroccan-run bazaars, the Governor's residence at the Convent with its changing of the guard, and Casemates Square's cafe sprawl where the old garrison paraded. The flanking lanes climb to the Moorish Castle's tower and descend to bastion walls that ring the old town whole - four centuries of siege architecture now holding duty-free perfume and pub gardens with equal composure.
