Gorham's Cave Complex

In the Rock's sheer eastern cliffs, sea caves hold one of human history's most poignant chapters: Gorham's Cave and its neighbours preserve Neanderthal occupation spanning tens of thousands of years - hearths, tools, evidence of seafood dinners and, most famously, an abstract rock engraving argued as Neanderthal symbolic art - with the complex reading as among the species' last known refuges before their disappearance. UNESCO inscribed the cliffs in 2016. Interior access is scientifically restricted; the Europa Advance viewing platform and its interpretation tell the story above the cave mouths, with the Strait's African horizon completing the deep-time frame.
