Orrdalsklint

Orrdalsklint in Saltvik rises to 129 metres and is the highest point in the Åland Islands, a granite rise with a marked trail to the top and an observation tower on it. From the top the view runs over forest, fields and water across most of the northern part of the main island. The walk up is short and easy by any standard, which is a fair reflection of Åland's topography.

Background

Orrdalsklint rises to 129.1 metres above sea level and lies in Saltvik municipality, some 7 kilometers northeast of the town centre. Besides the observation tower, the summit has a cabin for hikers. The hill was among the first parts of Åland to emerge from the sea, about 10,000 years ago. The first people came here about 6,000 years ago, and they belonged to the Comb Ceramic culture and the Pitted Ware culture.

When to go

May to September is the season for walking. Autumn colour is good in September. Winter leaves the trail snow-covered and slippery.

Before you go

At 129 metres it is a hill rather than a mountain and the climb is minimal. Trees limit the view in places despite the tower. Facilities amount to a car park.
