Cerro Tusa

Cerro Tusa rises to about 1,900 metres above the Cauca valley and its shape is the point: seen from certain angles it is a near-symmetrical triangle with straight sides converging to a point, which has led to a persistent local and internet claim that it is an artificial pyramid. It is not - it is a volcanic and tectonic formation, and geologists have been clear about that - but the shape is genuinely striking and the claim keeps circulating. Petroglyphs and evidence of pre-Hispanic use are found around its base, which the peoples of the region evidently regarded as significant. The climb to the summit takes two to three hours, is steep and exposed with scrambling near the top, and a guide is sensible. The view covers the Cauca valley.

Things to know

It is not a pyramid, whatever you may have read. The climb is steep and exposed near the summit with real fall risk. Heat is heavy on the lower slopes. Take a guide - the route is not obvious.
