Jebel Dukhan, the mountain of smoke, rises to 134 metres in the middle of Bahrain and is the highest ground on the island, a limestone dome named for the haze that gathers around it on humid days. The country's oil field lies below it. Around its base is the eroded ground known as the Bahrain rim, and the road across the interior gives the clearest sense of what the island looked like before development.

What you actually see

  • The summit rise - 134 metres, the highest ground in the country.
  • The limestone dome - the eroded structure the whole island's geology centres on.
  • The oil field - the working installations spread below the hill.
  • The interior desert - open ground giving a sense of the pre-development island.

When to go

November to March is the comfortable season. Summer heat in the interior is severe. Haze around the hill is heaviest in humid weather.

Honest expectations

The summit area holds installations and access to the top is restricted. There is no trail and the visit is effectively a drive-by. The oil field surroundings dominate the setting.

Nearby

The First Oil Well is below, and Al Areen is northwest.
