Dilmun Burial Mounds

Across northern Bahrain, low circular mounds rise from the ground in their thousands - burial tumuli built between roughly 2200 and 1750 BCE during the Dilmun period, when the island was a major trading centre. At their peak there may have been over seventy thousand; development has taken many, and the surviving fields are now UNESCO-listed. Some at A'ali are royal mounds, considerably larger, with chambers inside. The scale of the cemetery relative to the island's likely population has puzzled archaeologists for a century, with theories ranging from Dilmun as a burial destination to simply very long occupation.

• A'ali royal mounds - the largest tombs, with internal chambers.
• The Saar settlement - a Dilmun-era village site nearby.
• The scale - the sheer number of burials across the landscape.

When to go

The cool months from November to March are the only comfortable option, as the fields are entirely exposed. Morning and late afternoon light shows the mound shapes best. Summer visits are genuinely uncomfortable.

Honest expectations

This is a subtle site - low earth mounds in scrubby ground, with modern housing pressing right up against some fields, and it can look unremarkable without context. Visiting after the Bahrain Fort Museum makes far more sense than before. Facilities are limited to a few interpreted areas. Some mounds sit among working potteries in A'ali, which is atmospheric but confusing to navigate.
