Qal'at al-Bahrain

Qal'at al-Bahrain, the Bahrain Fort, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of immense historical depth, a great artificial mound, or tell, on the north coast built up over some 4,000 years of continuous human occupation. Excavations have revealed layer upon layer of settlement, and it is believed to have been the capital of the ancient Dilmun, the fabled trading civilisation that flourished here and was known even to the Mesopotamians as a paradise. Crowning the mound today are the picturesque remains of a sixteenth-century Portuguese fort, and an excellent site museum tells the story of the many civilisations that lived here.

When to go

November to March, the cool season, for comfortable exploration, as Bahrain's summers are ferociously hot; the fort is especially atmospheric and photogenic in the late afternoon and at sunset, when it glows against the sea. The site museum is worth visiting first to understand the many layers of history.

Honest expectations

To the untrained eye, much of the site is excavated foundations and mounds rather than grand standing monuments, apart from the later Portuguese fort, so a visit to the excellent museum and ideally a guide greatly enrich the experience by revealing the astonishing depth of history. As the seat of the ancient Dilmun civilisation and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Gulf, though, crowned by a scenic seaside fort, Qal'at al-Bahrain is genuinely significant and rewarding.
