Manama

Manama, the capital of Bahrain, is a lively and cosmopolitan Gulf city that blends Arabian tradition with modern ambition. At its heart, the atmospheric Manama Souq, entered through the landmark Bab al-Bahrain gateway, is a warren of lanes selling spices, gold, textiles, perfumes and pearls, evoking the island's mercantile and pearling past. When to go

November to March, the cool season, for the most comfortable weather, as the summers are extremely hot and humid; the souq is liveliest in the cool of the evening. Bahrain is known as one of the more relaxed Gulf states, and the winter months are also when the Formula One Grand Prix draws crowds to the island.

Honest expectations

Manama shares much with other Gulf cities, blending traditional souq and mosque with a modern skyline, so it is not the most distinctive Arabian capital, and its appeal is its relaxed, diverse atmosphere, heritage and pearling history rather than blockbuster sights; the summer heat is punishing. As a lively, welcoming and comparatively liberal Gulf capital, though, with an atmospheric souq, grand mosque and rich history, Manama is a pleasant and interesting base for the island kingdom.
