Al-Mukalla

Al-Mukalla strings its whitewashed front along the Arabian Sea where the Hadhramaut's ochre cliffs meet the water - the region's harbour capital, grown on fishing, frankincense-era trade and the Indian Ocean connections that sent Hadhrami merchants to Java and back with fortunes and architectural ideas. The old quarter's tall houses wear carved doors and pastel trims along the khor's curve, the fish market lands tuna and kingfish at dawn theatre, and the corniche evenings - families, tea, the cliffs going rose - carry the easy maritime culture the coast has always kept.

Background

Mukalla began in 1035 as a fishing settlement. Over the centuries it carried other names: Bandar Yaqoub, after Yaqoub bin Yusuf, a saint who settled here around the 12th century AD; Bandar Al-Naqeeb, after Salah bin Hamad Al-Kassadi of the Al-Kassad dynasty, which governed the town in the 18th century; and Bandar Ghalib, from the reign of Sultan Ghaleb bin Awad Al-Quaiti in the early 20th century. The travellers Theodore and Mabel Bent passed through several times in the 1890s on their way into the Wadi Hadhramaut. Today it is the most important port of the Hadhramaut region, about 480 kilometres east of Aden, with approximately 595,000 people as of 2023 and Riyan International Airport nearby.
