The Sabaean kingdom - Sheba of the scriptures - built its wealth on water engineering, and the Great Dam of Marib was antiquity's supreme example: from around the eighth century BC its earthen barrage and monumental stone sluice systems caught the wadi's flash floods to irrigate gardens that fed tens of thousands, working with maintenance for over a millennium until the final breach in the sixth century AD scattered the tribes in an event the Quran itself records. The surviving sluice towers stand in dressed-stone precision at the wadi's shoulders, temple ruins of the Awam and Barran sanctuaries nearby completing the capital's archaeology.

What you actually see

  • The sluice towers - the dam's monumental stone throats.
  • The wadi span - reading the vanished barrage between shoulders.
  • The Awam temple - the moon sanctuary's pillared oval.
  • The Barran colonnade - the 'throne of Bilqis' pillars.

When to go

Honest expectations

State it plainly: this is when-possible heritage governed by current conditions and specialist partners' judgement without exception. The remains ask historical imagination - the towers are magnificent fragments of a system whose scale lives in the telling.
