Silay grew rich on sugar between the 1880s and the 1930s, and the planters built in town rather than on the estates. Around thirty of their houses survive, timber above stone, with capiz shell windows, wide verandas and iron cresting, standing along ordinary streets among tricycles and sari-sari shops. Three are museums. Balay Negrense, a bare-boarded mansion of enormous rooms, shows how a planter household actually worked; the Jalandoni house, painted pink, keeps its family furniture; the Hofilena house holds a private collection of Philippine paintings and is shown by the owner's family by appointment. A domed pro-cathedral anchors the plaza.
What you actually see
- Balay Negrense - a huge timber planter's house with sparse rooms and period kitchen and bath.
- The Jalandoni house - the pink mansion on the main street with its original family furniture.
- The Hofilena house - a private art collection shown by appointment, hung floor to ceiling.
- San Diego Pro-Cathedral - the domed church on the plaza, unusual in a country of towered facades.
When to go
December to May. Museum houses keep short daytime hours and the Hofilena house requires arranging a visit in advance; do not turn up expecting entry. Mornings are cooler for walking between houses. Silay is fifteen minutes from the airport, so it works as a first or last stop on a Negros trip.
Honest expectations
Most of the thirty houses are private and you see only their outsides, from a pavement shared with traffic. The three museums are modest, hot inside, and can be done in two hours total. Silay itself is a working provincial city, not a preserved district, so the heritage is interspersed with concrete shopfronts. Fees are charged per house and add up.
Nearby
The Ruins at Talisay is twenty minutes south; Bacolod and its restaurants and markets are half an hour away.
