St Joseph the Worker Chapel stands inside the compound of the Victorias Milling Company, one of the great sugar centrals of Negros, and it was decorated in the 1950s by Alfonso Ossorio, a Filipino-American artist connected to the New York abstract expressionist circle, who covered the sanctuary wall with a mural of Christ in judgment - stark, fierce-eyed and rendered in hard colours, quite unlike the gentle imagery of Philippine devotional art, which is why it has been called the Angry Christ ever since. Ade Bethune contributed mosaics of a Holy Family depicted as Filipinos, and the exterior carries further mosaic work in local materials. The chapel served the mill's workers and their families and still functions as a parish. Because it sits inside a working industrial compound, visitors register at the gate, and access can depend on operations - it is worth confirming before making the trip from Bacolod.

What you actually see

  • The Angry Christ mural - Ossorio's sanctuary wall.
  • The Filipino Holy Family - Bethune's mosaics.
  • The exterior mosaics - local materials on the outside walls.
  • The mill compound - the sugar central around the chapel.

When to go

November to May for travel. Weekday mornings during compound working hours; access outside those is uncertain.

Honest expectations

The chapel is inside a private industrial compound - registration at the gate is required and access is not guaranteed. Photography rules vary. It is an hour from Bacolod.

Nearby

Silay's heritage houses are between here and Bacolod; the Sagay Marine Reserve is further north.
