The Na Hang reservoir was created by the Tuyen Quang hydroelectric dam in the 2000s, flooding the valleys of the Gam and Nang rivers between limestone hills, and the result is a long lake winding between karst towers with forest on the slopes above it - the comparison with Ha Long is made locally and is about form rather than geology. Boats run from Na Hang town to the Khuoi Nhi and Mo waterfalls and up the Nang river towards Ba Be. The surrounding Na Hang-Lam Binh reserve holds one of the few remaining populations of the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, a species down to a few hundred animals.

Honest expectations
The monkeys are critically endangered, hard to find and not a reliable sighting. Boat trips are negotiated and take most of a day. Water levels vary with the dam. Facilities in Na Hang are basic.
