Dong Van Karst Plateau

The Dong Van plateau covers much of northern Ha Giang, a UNESCO Global Geopark of grey limestone cones and thin soil where farmers plant maize in pockets between the rocks. Roads climb and drop constantly, linking market towns such as Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac, and the old quarter of Dong Van keeps a small square of tiled shophouses around a covered market. Villages of Hmong, Lo Lo and Tay families are strung along the ridges, many built of rammed earth behind stone walls. The plateau is the setting for the Ha Giang loop, usually ridden over three or four days, and it rewards slow travel far more than a checklist of stops.

• Dong Van old quarter - the small square of tiled shophouses around the covered market building.
• Stone-walled fields - maize plots built up by hand between bare limestone outcrops.
• Highland market days - the trading mornings that draw villagers into Meo Vac and Dong Van.
• Quan Ba twin hills - the rounded green mounds at the plateau's southern gateway.

When to go

September to November is the driest stretch and the season of buckwheat flowers; March brings peach and plum blossom in the villages. Winter nights up here are genuinely cold and fog is common. Markets run on fixed days, usually at the weekend in the main towns, so it is worth planning the route around them rather than the other way round.

Honest expectations

Getting here is the hard part: six to seven hours from Hanoi, then several days of steep switchbacks. Riding standards on the loop are mixed and accidents among inexperienced tourists are common. Accommodation is homestays and simple hotels, often noisy and cold in winter. Village visits can feel intrusive when tour groups arrive in numbers, and English is limited outside the main towns.

Ma Pi Leng pass and the Nho Que canyon lie at the plateau's eastern edge, with Cao Bang a long day's drive further east.
