My Khe Beach

My Khe runs for several kilometres along the eastern side of Da Nang, wide pale sand with a gentle shelf, and it was essentially undeveloped until the 2000s, when the city built the bridges across the Han and the whole strip went up - resorts, apartment towers and a promenade, in about fifteen years. It is a genuine city beach: locals swim at dawn and again in the late afternoon, and the middle of the day is left to the heat. From October the north-east monsoon brings big surf and rip currents and the beach is often flagged closed, which is worth taking seriously.

What you actually see

• Several kilometres of pale sand - with a gentle shelf.
• A resort strip built since the 2000s - after the bridges opened the eastern bank.
• Dawn and late afternoon swimming - the local pattern.
• Closures from October - when the monsoon surf arrives.

February to August; the sea is dangerous from about October. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Rip currents here have killed people and red flags mean it. The strip is heavily built and the sand is busy. Shade is limited and sunbeds are charged. Water quality after heavy rain is variable.
