The Marble Mountains are five isolated hills standing on the sandy plain between Da Nang and Hoi An, named after the elements and honeycombed with caves. Only the largest, Thuy Son, is fully open: stone stairways and a small lift lead up to a plateau of pagodas, gateways and viewpoints, and from there passages drop into caverns where shrines sit under shafts of daylight. Huyen Khong cave is the best known, a high chamber with a Buddha figure and incense smoke catching the light from a hole in the roof. At the base, stone carving workshops line the road, a trade that has worked this marble for generations.
What you actually see
- Huyen Khong cave - the high chamber lit by a shaft of daylight through the roof.
- Thuy Son viewpoints - platforms looking over the coast and the other four hills.
- The stairway pagodas - temples and gateways cut into the rock along the climb.
- Stone carving workshops - the marble yards and studios clustered at the foot of the hills.
When to go
February to August is drier and the cave floors are less slippery; autumn rain makes the stone steps treacherous. Go early, before the heat and before the tour buses arrive from Hoi An and the cruise port. The lift saves the first climb but not the rest, and the site is at its quietest in the last hour before closing.
Honest expectations
The hill is small and can be walked in an hour, yet tour groups fill the narrow stairways and cave entrances and create bottlenecks. The steps are steep, uneven and slippery, and there is little shade above ground. Sellers around the base are persistent and the carving shops push hard for a sale. Several caves are dark enough to need a torch, and signage is minimal.
Nearby
Hoi An old town is twenty minutes south, and Da Nang's beaches run north along the same road.
