La Pedrera is a single main street running out to a low cliff above the sea, with a long beach on either side of the point: Playa El Barco to the north, named for a wreck whose remains still show, and Playa Desplayado to the south. It is smaller and scruffier than La Paloma and has kept a bohemian reputation. Its carnival, held over the Carnival days - usually in February - fills the street with costume and drums.

When to go
December to February is the season. The carnival falls on the movable Carnival dates, usually in February, and the village is packed. Southern right whales pass between July and October.
Honest expectations
The village is tiny and fills completely in January; accommodation must be booked months ahead. Outside summer nearly everything closes. There are few facilities and no supermarket to speak of.
