Vama Veche
The last village on the Romanian coast, a former artists' and free-camping beach that has kept some of its bohemian reputation.

Vama Veche built its reputation in the communist decades as a place where writers, academics and students camped on the sand and behaved with a freedom that was harder to find elsewhere, and it kept that identity through the 1990s as a tent-and-guitar beach with almost no infrastructure. It has changed a great deal since: guesthouses, bars and restaurants line the streets behind the beach, the free camping has been largely pushed out or formalised, and in high summer the village is loud and crowded with music running late. What survives is a looser, scruffier atmosphere than the big resorts, a beach without paid lounger grids across all of it, and a tradition of watching the sunrise over the sea at the end of the night. The village sits right against the border, and 2 Mai next door is quieter and increasingly the choice of people who found Vama Veche too busy.
What you actually see
- The open beach - long sand with fewer lounger enclosures than the big resorts.
- The bar strip - a dense run of bars and small restaurants behind the beach.
- Summer festivals - music events that fill the village in July and August.
- 2 Mai - the quieter neighbouring village up the coast.
When to go
June to September. June and early September are far more pleasant than the peak, when the village is packed and noisy. Out of season it is almost deserted and most places close. Weekdays are calmer than weekends throughout.
Honest expectations
The bohemian reputation is now largely marketing: in high season this is a crowded party village with loud music until dawn, and anyone seeking quiet should go elsewhere. Accommodation is basic and overpriced in August. Sanitation and litter on the beach have been persistent problems in peak weeks.
Nearby
2 Mai is a short walk north; Mangalia and the southern resorts lie beyond.
