Kolomyia

Kolomyia sits on the Prut where the Carpathian foothills meet the Pokuttia plain, and it has been the market town for the Hutsul highlands for centuries. Two museums make it worth a stop: the Museum of Hutsul and Pokuttia Folk Art, with one of the best collections of mountain craft anywhere, and the Pysanka Museum, housed in a thirteen-metre building shaped and painted as a decorated Easter egg. The pysanka tradition itself was recognised by UNESCO in 2024.

Background

Kolomyia, once known as Kolomea, lies on the Prut in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and is the administrative centre of its raion, with an estimated 60,821 people in 2022. It stands roughly halfway between Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi, at the heart of the historical region of Pokuttia. The town is a railway hub and an industrial centre for textiles, shoes, metalwork, machinery, wood and paper, and it remains a centre of Hutsul culture. Until 1925 it was the most populous town in the region.

When to go

May to October is the comfortable season. Museums keep weekday and Saturday hours and close on Mondays. Easter brings the pysanka tradition to life across the region.

Practical notes

The egg-shaped building is a novelty and divides opinion sharply. The town outside the museums is workaday. Museum labelling is almost entirely in Ukrainian.
