Vorokhta

Vorokhta sits high on the Prut where the railway to Rakhiv has to climb, and the line is carried on stone arch viaducts built under Austrian administration at the start of the twentieth century, still in use and the village's best-known feature. There is also a wooden church of the Hutsul type moved here in the eighteenth century, and the village has long been a training base for Ukrainian biathlon and ski jumping.

Background

Vorokhta, Worochta in Polish, lies in the Carpathians on the Prut in Nadvirna Raion of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, and it heads the Vorokhta settlement hromada. It began as a spa town for visitors and later became a ski resort with several ski-jumping ramps, known as Avanhard. Its population was estimated at 4,207 in 2022, though the steady flow of tourists keeps the real number higher for most of the year. The village sits at about 800 metres on an area of 15 square kilometres and has close ties to the Hutsuls, the Ukrainian highlanders of the Carpathians, so it is often called a Hutsul capital.

When to go

May to October for walking and the viaducts; December to March for snow. Autumn colour in the valley is exceptional. Trains through the village run on a limited timetable.

What to expect

The village is strung out along the road with no real centre. Facilities are basic guesthouses. Photographing the viaducts well needs a walk to find the angle.

Nearby

Yaremche is north down the valley, and Hoverla is south in the high mountains.
