Lake Nesamovyte

Nesamovyte is a small dark tarn scooped by ice into the flank of the Chornohora ridge at about 1,750 metres, no more than a few dozen metres across, sitting below the crest between Hoverla and Turkul. The name means the frenzied one, and Hutsul tradition attached storms to it: throwing a stone in was said to bring bad weather, which on this ridge it very often does anyway. Walkers on the ridge traverse pass it as a matter of course.

• The alpine flora - high meadow plants around the shore in July.

When to go

June to September is the season; snow fills the hollow well into June. The water is very cold year round. Afternoon storms build on the ridge in summer.

Things to know

It is small and takes five minutes to look at; it is a waypoint on a long walk rather than a destination. There is no shelter anywhere near. The ridge is exposed and the weather turns fast.

Hoverla is northwest along the crest, and Dzembronia is below to the southeast.
