Lake Atitlan, in the western highlands of Guatemala, is widely considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, a deep-blue expanse filling a vast volcanic caldera and cradled by three towering, perfectly conical volcanoes. Ringed by traditional Maya villages, each with its own distinct character, culture and vibe, from the laid-back backpacker haven of San Pedro to the New Age retreat of San Marcos and the weaving town of Santiago, it is explored by boat and offers a serene, spectacular highland escape.

What you actually see

  • The volcano-ringed lake - the deep-blue lake and three volcanoes.
  • The Maya villages - the distinct lakeside towns and their cultures.
  • The village-hopping - the boat trips between the different villages.
  • The markets and weaving - the traditional crafts of the towns.

When to go

November to April, the dry season, for the clearest weather and views of the volcanoes; the highland climate is spring-like, so bring a layer for cool mornings and evenings. Mornings are calmest on the lake before the afternoon wind, the Xocomil, picks up.

Honest expectations

The villages are linked mainly by boat, and the afternoon wind can make crossings choppy, so travel in the calmer morning. Each village has a very different character, so choosing a base matters. It has become popular, with some villages touristy or backpacker-heavy. As in much of Guatemala, take normal precautions with valuables. Its beauty and Maya culture, though, are captivating.

Nearby

Antigua, the Chichicastenango market and the highland towns are within reach.
