Yaremche

Yaremche grew as a mountain resort when the railway came through, and it works as the front door to the Ukrainian Carpathians: hotels and guesthouses along the Prut, a rail line that climbs on stone viaducts, and the Probiy waterfall dropping over rock ledges in the centre of town with a footbridge across it. The craft market strung along the river below the falls is the largest in the mountains, heavy on wood, wool and honey.

When to go

May to October is the main season, with autumn colour in the valley the best of the year. Winter brings skiers passing through to Bukovel. Summer weekends are crowded.

Honest expectations

The centre is heavily commercialised and the market sells a lot of imported goods alongside real craft. The waterfall is modest and the viewing platforms are crowded. Prices are high by regional standards.

Nearby

Bukovel is up the valley, and Hoverla is southeast in the high mountains.
