Bright sits in the Ovens Valley below the Victorian Alps, and in the nineteenth century its residents planted European deciduous trees along the streets and river, which is why a town in a country of evergreens now stages one of Australia's few genuine autumn displays: oaks, maples, poplars and liquidambars turning through late April and May, celebrated with an autumn festival. The Ovens River runs through the centre with swimming holes and a walking path, the rail trail to Wangaratta and Beechworth is a long flat cycle route, and the mountain bike trails at Mystic have hosted world-level enduro racing. Hotham, Falls Creek and Buffalo are all within an hour for winter snow.

What you actually see

  • The autumn colour - European trees turning through late April and May.
  • The Ovens River - swimming holes and the riverside path through town.
  • Mystic Mountain Bike Park - gravity and cross-country trails above town.
  • The rail trail - the flat cycling route to Beechworth and Wangaratta.

When to go

April to May for autumn colour, which peaks toward the end of April in most years; December to March for swimming, cycling and walking. Winter makes Bright a base for the nearby snowfields. Accommodation is scarce and expensive at both peaks.

Honest expectations

The autumn window is short and shifts by a fortnight year to year. Accommodation books out months ahead in April and in ski season, at high prices. Summer bushfire smoke has affected the valley in several recent years.

Nearby

Mount Buffalo rises west; Beechworth lies north and Hotham south on the alpine road.
