Fort Patiko
A rock outcrop north of Gulu fortified by Samuel Baker in 1872, with a grim earlier history.

Fort Patiko stands on a granite outcrop north of Gulu, a site used as a holding and trading post during the nineteenth-century slave trade in the region before Samuel Baker took it in 1872 and built a fortified station there, digging a trench around the rock. Grooves worn into the rock, said to be from sharpening and from the sorting of captives, remain visible along with Baker's trench, the graves of his men and rock shelters.
