Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust

The Wildfowl Trust occupies about twenty-five hectares around two lakes inside the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery compound, which is an unlikely setting for a conservation centre and works because the land was fenced and left. Founded in 1966, it breeds endangered waterfowl for release, including the white-cheeked pintail and the blue and gold macaw, which was reintroduced to Nariva from stock raised here. Over a hundred and eighty bird species have been recorded.

When to go

January to May is driest. Early morning is best for birds. Booking is required and entry needs identification at the refinery gate.

What to expect

Entry is through an industrial security gate and requires prior booking and identification; casual visits are not possible. The refinery surrounds the reserve and is visible and audible. Opening days are limited.
