Getting thereFrom the Toco Main Road near Salybia; about an hour on a forest trail
EntryFree; guides charged

Rio Seco, also called Salybia Waterfall, is reached by a trail of about an hour through forest from the Toco Main Road on Trinidad's northeast coast. The fall itself is modest but the pool below it is the attraction: deep, green and enclosed by rock, deep enough to jump into from the ledges around it. The trail crosses the river several times and passes through good secondary forest with plenty of birds.

What you actually see

  • The emerald pool - a deep green pool below the fall, enclosed by rock.
  • The forest trail - about an hour through secondary forest with river crossings.
  • The jumping ledges - rock shelves around the pool used for jumping in.
  • The birdlife - forest species along the trail and around the pool.

When to go

January to May is driest and the trail is easiest. After heavy rain the river rises and the crossings become dangerous. Weekends bring more walkers.

Honest expectations

The trail crosses the river several times and rises quickly after rain in the hills. The path is muddy and poorly marked in places; guides are advisable. There are no facilities.

Nearby

Matura is south, and Galera Point is north.
