Dili

Dili, the seaside capital of Timor-Leste, is the gateway to one of the world's youngest and least-visited nations, a laid-back city set on a beautiful bay between mountains and sea. It bears the layered marks of its history: faded Portuguese colonial buildings, Catholic churches, and, above all, moving memorials to the long, brutal struggle for independence, including the Resistance Museum and the Santa Cruz cemetery. Overlooking the bay from a headland stands the towering Cristo Rei statue, a giant hilltop Christ reached by a scenic climb, offering sweeping views and beaches below.

When to go

May to November, the dry season, for the most pleasant weather and easiest travel; the city is hot and humid year-round. Dili is the base for exploring the country, from Atauro Island offshore to the mountains and the far-eastern beaches, and rewards a day or two taking in its history and setting.

Honest expectations

Timor-Leste is one of the world's youngest and poorest nations, still recovering from a traumatic occupation and struggle for independence, so Dili is a modest, developing capital with limited infrastructure rather than a polished destination, and its most powerful sights are its sombre memorials. Approached with awareness of that recent, painful history, though, and as a friendly, laid-back gateway to a beautiful, unspoilt country, Dili is a moving and worthwhile introduction.
