York is one of the most historic cities in England, layered by Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and medieval builders and still encircled by its ancient city walls. It is crowned by York Minster, one of the greatest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, and threaded by the Shambles, a crooked medieval lane of overhanging timbered shops, with the Jorvik centre bringing its Viking past vividly to life.

What you actually see

  • York Minster - the mighty Gothic cathedral with its stained glass.
  • The city walls - the walk around the medieval ramparts.
  • The Shambles - the crooked medieval lane of overhanging shops.
  • Jorvik and the museums - the Viking centre and the National Railway Museum.

When to go

Spring to autumn for the best weather and the wall walk; December brings a famous Christmas market. It is a two-hour train from London, rewarding an overnight to enjoy the city once the day crowds thin.

Honest expectations

The Shambles and centre get very crowded, especially in summer and at Christmas; early morning is calmer. The Minster charges entry for sightseeing. It is compact and walkable, and pairs well with the Yorkshire Dales and Moors nearby for a longer trip.

Nearby

The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are close; the spa town of Harrogate is nearby.
