Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

Cistercian monks founded Fountains in 1132 and built it into one of the wealthiest houses in England before the dissolution closed it in 1539. What is left is vast rather than fragmentary: the cellarium runs three hundred feet under an unbroken vault, the tower still stands, and you walk the church at full height with the sky for a roof. From 1718 John Aislabie laid out the valley downstream as a water garden, with still ponds cut into geometric shapes, a Temple of Piety and paths engineered so that the ruins appear suddenly as a framed view. Abbey and garden were inscribed together, and a deer park adds several hundred acres more.

What you actually see

• The cellarium - a vaulted undercroft running the length of the west range.
• The water garden - moon ponds, cascades and the Temple of Piety of the 1730s.
• Anne Boleyn's Seat - the viewpoint that frames the abbey from the valley side.
• The deer park - several hundred acres with red, fallow and sika deer.

When to go

Spring for the water garden filling out and autumn for colour through the valley. The site is large and almost entirely outdoors, so a dry day matters more than a warm one. Winter keeps shorter hours but low sun on wet stone is the best light of the year. Weekends and school holidays fill the car parks early.

Honest expectations

It is a long walk between abbey, garden and church, with hills at both ends and a shuttle that only runs sometimes. Admission is not cheap for a family unless you already hold a membership. Paths flood in wet spells and the grass inside the ruins turns to mud. Interpretation within the abbey itself is sparse.
