Treriksroset

Three countries meet at a point in the water at the north-west corner of Sweden, and the marker is a yellow concrete cylinder standing in the shallows, reached by a boardwalk out from the shore - a block of concrete cast in 1926 some ten metres out in the lake Koltajaure. It is the northernmost point of Sweden and the northernmost meeting point of three countries anywhere in the world. Getting there is the substance of the visit: either an eleven-kilometre walk each way from Kilpisjarvi in Finland, largely on boardwalk over wet ground, or the boat across the lake in summer which cuts the walk to about three kilometres. The ground around is open fell with Malla nature reserve on the Finnish side. Nothing is here but the marker and the view.

Practical notes

Access is easiest from the Finnish side, not the Swedish. The boat runs a short season and depends on weather. There is nothing at the marker but the marker. Mosquitoes are severe in July.
