Hallingsafallet

The Hallingsan drops about 42 metres into the head of a gorge that runs on for some eight hundred metres, the longest canyon in Sweden, between 15 and 60 metres wide, cut deep and narrow into the rock with near-vertical sides and the river hidden at the bottom for much of its length. A suspension bridge crosses above the fall and a trail runs along the rim with viewpoints down into the canyon. It sits on the Vildmarksvagen route in northern Jamtland, which is how most people come across it. Flow is heaviest in early summer after the melt, and the constant spray between walls over fifty metres high keeps alive a rare flora of mosses and lichens, which is why the gorge is a nature reserve. There is a car park and a shelter, and otherwise nothing - the nearest settlement is some way off.

Things to know

The gorge floor is not accessible - viewing is from the rim. Paths near the edge are unfenced in places. Beyond the car park there is nothing provided. It is remote.
