Krang Suri Falls

Krang Suri lies in the Jaintia Hills and drops into a pool whose colour is a strong blue-green, the result of dissolved minerals from the limestone the stream runs through scattering light in the water. The pool is deep and used for swimming, with life jackets available at the site and a roped area. Reaching it involves a descent of a few hundred steps from the road through forest, and returning is the harder part. The colour is at its strongest in the dry months when the water is clear; after heavy rain the fall runs brown and the pool loses the effect entirely.

When to go

October to April, when the water clears and the colour appears; during and after the monsoon it runs brown. Weekends are crowded and the pool busy.

Honest expectations

The pool colour disappears entirely in the wet months. The climb back up is steep. Swimming is at your own risk despite the jackets, and the pool is deep. Facilities are basic.
