Skakavac Waterfall

Skakavac drops ninety-eight metres in a single fall over a cliff in beech forest on the northern edge of the Sarajevo basin, protected as a nature monument, and it is the closest thing of its scale to a capital city anywhere in the region. The approach is a marked trail from Nahorevo through forest, taking around an hour, with a viewpoint above the fall and a path down to the base where the spray reaches. The flow is strong in spring with snowmelt and drops considerably by late summer, sometimes to a thread. In winter the fall freezes into a column and is climbed by ice climbers. The surrounding forest is part of a protected landscape.

When to go

April to June for the strongest flow from snowmelt; by August and September it can be a thread. Winter freezing draws ice climbers. The trail is muddy in spring and slippery in frost.

Honest expectations

Flow drops sharply in late summer and can disappoint. The trail is an hour each way with a climb. There are no facilities at the fall. The path down to the base is steep and slippery.
