Cambugahay Falls

Cambugahay is a set of low tiers on a stream near Lazi where the water pools in basins that run a strong milky turquoise - the colour comes from dissolved limestone, the same chemistry that produces the blue in Kawasan and Kabutongan on other islands. Nothing here is high; the appeal is the sequence of pools and the way the water sheets over the rock ledges between them, plus the rope swings hung from the trees over the deepest basin, which is where most visitors spend their time and which has made the place one of Siquijor's most photographed spots. Bamboo rafts get pushed under the falls for a fee, and vendors handle life jackets and swings. Getting down is about a hundred and thirty steps from the road, an easy descent and a warm climb back. It is best early: by mid-morning the pools are busy and the swing has a queue.

When to go

June to November for fuller flow and stronger colour; the dry months reduce both. Early morning for quiet and the best light.

Before you go

It is small and gets crowded and loud. Swings, rafts and jackets are all charged separately on top of entry. Rocks are slippery, and the climb back up is 135 steps in heat.
