Caleruega is a Dominican retreat house in the hills of Nasugbu, named after the Spanish town where Saint Dominic was born, and its Transfiguration Chapel has become one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the country - a small stone-and-timber church on a rise, approached through gardens, with the ridges of Batangas and the cone of Mount Batulao filling the view behind it. The grounds are the other half: landscaped gardens, a hilltop cross, a way of the cross laid out along a path, viewing decks and a stretch of woodland, all kept for retreatants and day visitors. It sits in the cool belt near Tagaytay, so mornings are misty and the air is noticeably better than on the coast. Because weddings are booked almost continuously at weekends, the chapel is often closed to casual visitors then, and the grounds are the part most people actually see.

What you actually see

  • The Transfiguration Chapel - the stone chapel on the rise.
  • The gardens - landscaped grounds and the hilltop cross.
  • The Batulao view - the mountain and ridges behind.
  • The retreat grounds - paths, decks and woodland.

When to go

November to May for clear views; mornings for mist and cool air. Weekdays if you want to see inside the chapel - weekends are booked with weddings.

Honest expectations

The chapel is frequently closed for weddings, especially at weekends. Entry is charged and rates vary. Public transport does not reach it usefully; a vehicle is effectively required.

Nearby

Mount Batulao's trailheads are close; Tagaytay and the Taal ridge are about forty minutes away.
