Sardinella tawilis is a freshwater sardine that lives only in Taal Lake, and its existence is a piece of geological history: the lake was a bay of the sea until eruptions sealed it off some centuries ago, the water gradually turned fresh, and the sardines trapped inside adapted. It is eaten fried whole until crisp and dipped in vinegar, or dried, or cooked in a sour broth, and it has been a Batangas staple for generations. In 2018 the IUCN listed it as endangered, on the basis of overfishing, pollution and introduced predator species in the lake, and the fisheries bureau has since imposed closed seasons and gear restrictions. Whether to eat it is therefore a genuine question rather than a rhetorical one: local regulation permits a managed catch, the species remains under pressure, and a visitor is entitled to read the fisheries bureau's current rules and the IUCN assessment and make their own decision.
What you actually see
- The whole fried fish - crisp, eaten head and all.
- The vinegar dip - the standard accompaniment.
- The lakeshore markets - tawilis sold fresh and dried.
- The lake itself - the only water this species lives in.
When to go
Year-round, subject to the closed season the fisheries bureau sets - which is worth checking, since fish sold during a closure is illegally caught.
Honest expectations
The species is listed as endangered and is fished under restriction. Check the current closed-season dates before ordering, and note that this page does not tell you whether to eat it - read the fisheries and IUCN material and decide.
Nearby
Taal heritage town and the Tagaytay ridge are above the lake; Batangas City is south.
